Inside the neighborhood
Midtown is one of the neighborhoods on the City of Miami's official neighborhood map, a compact district bordered by Wynwood, Edgewater and the Design District. It was built on the former Buena Vista rail yard of the Florida East Coast Railway. Development began in 2005, but the real estate downturn of 2007 left only part of the original plan finished, and later projects have filled in around it.
Daily life revolves around The Shops at Midtown Miami, an open-air retail center anchored by Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Ross Dress for Less. Residential towers rise around it, including 4 Midtown, Hyde Midtown, Eve at the District and The Standard Residences, so groceries, errands and restaurants are often a short walk from home.
Midtown's location is its biggest draw. Wynwood, with the Wynwood Walls outdoor mural museum, is right next door, the Miami Design District is just to the north, and Edgewater and Biscayne Bay are to the east. Interstate 195 leads across the Julia Tuttle Causeway to Miami Beach, and Interstate 95 is close by for trips north and south.
For a condo buyer, Midtown offers newer buildings than much of Miami's condo stock, since its development only began in the 2000s, along with an urban, walkable setting. The trade-offs are limited green space, a long-standing criticism of the district, and busy streets. As anywhere in Miami, check each building's flood zone, insurance costs, rental rules and association finances before buying.
