Inside the neighborhood
North Bay Village is a small city made up of three islands, Harbor Island, North Bay Island and Treasure Island, in Biscayne Bay along the 79th Street Causeway, also known as the John F. Kennedy Causeway. Before development, the only dry land here was Broadcast Key, a tiny island from which pioneer radio station WIOD began broadcasting in 1926. The village was incorporated in 1945.
The islands themselves are man-made. North Bay Island was created by dredging and bulkheading in 1940, and Harbor and Treasure islands followed in the late 1940s before being annexed by the village. Treasure Island takes its name, and street names such as Cutlass and Buccaneer, from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. In the mid-century decades the village became known for restaurants and nightclubs that drew celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland.
Today the village mixes quiet single-family streets with waterfront multi-family buildings. Our directory currently lists one building here, Caribbean Towers, on East Treasure Drive on Treasure Island. Waterfront dining remains part of local life: Benihana reopened in a new building on its original causeway site, and Palm Tree Club now occupies the former Shuckers site.
For a condo buyer, North Bay Village's appeal is its central, water-surrounded location: North Beach is a short drive east across the causeway and Biscayne Boulevard is just to the west. Island living also means paying close attention to flood zones, seawall condition and windstorm and flood insurance costs, and older buildings are subject to Florida's milestone-inspection and structural reserve study requirements.
